The Château 🏰

🍇A Medieval Treasure in the Heart of Beaujolais

Built between 1217 and 1221 by Guichard d’Oingt, a powerful lord of Beaujolais, The Château de Bagnols stands majestically among vineyards and the Monts du Lyonnais. Originally designed as a defensive fortress, it is surrounded by moats and features imposing towers, a testament to its strategic role in the Middle Ages.

🗝️ Transformations of the château through the centuries

Over the generations, the château has evolved, reflecting the tastes and aspirations of its successive owners:

  • 15th century: The château undergoes significant modifications, including the addition of the north tower to strengthen its defenses.

  • 16th century: The Camus family, wealthy merchants from Lyon, transform the medieval fortress into a Renaissance residence, introducing refined decorative elements and enlarging the windows to bring in more light.

  • 17th century: Gaspard Dugué, Treasurer of France, continues the château’s embellishment, adding French-style gardens and exquisite wall paintings, showcasing the era's opulence.

Today, this historic monument is recognized as one of the most beautiful hotels in the region, blending timeless charm with contemporary elegance.

🎬 A Hollywood Story

The Château de Bagnols has not only attracted nobles and dignitaries over the centuries. In the 1990s, Tom Cruise hosted a memorable celebration here for Nicole Kidman’s 30th birthday. He was so enchanted by the place that he asked the owner to build a round swimming pool, promising to return every year. The result? He never came back—but the famous pool remains! 😉
